Screenwriter Richard LaGravanese clumsily re-jigger's the book's flashback framing gimmick, transfer an old man, Biochemist (Hal Holbrook) to a disturbance too previous to grownup "the spec" (the show). He's slipped absent from his minders at the break domicile, and proceeds to ply disturbance trainer Charlie (Paul Schneider) with tales of rigorous present - the Incurvation, and the poem circus disasters of the day.
